Gabriel’s Daughter, The Life and Legacy of Clara Brown is a historic documentary that tells the true story of an African American pioneer through the lens of a world-premiere American opera. Freed from enslavement, Clara sought to find her only surviving daughter Eliza Jane, who was sold away from her at a slave auction. As a laundress and cook, Clara walked along with a wagon-train from Kentucky to the gold mines of Colorado where she established a successful laundry business and invested in real estate, gaining her great wealth and induction into the esteemed Colorado Pioneer Society. Near the end of her life, Clara was miraculously reunited with her daughter. An award-winning ensemble retells Clara’s story, as this film journeys from a New Jersey recording studio, with opera highlight performances, to historic Colorado locations. The storytelling is enhanced with candid interviews from the cast who, in examining Clara’s life, grapple with past and present societal interconnections.
