Never Ask Why Never Ask Why

Never Ask Why

The unfulfilled dream of a young football fan became the catalyst to help achieve the dreams of talented young under-15 football / soccer players who come from very underprivileged and under-nourished families, struggling to meet their daily needs.

'Never Ask Why' is the journey of Jishnu Mitra and how his dreams have provided hope to over 250 children in Delhi and Kolkata, India. It is the story of the 1st year of the Jishnu Mitra Foundation, where the children played under the banner of 'Dream Team' in the U-15 Delhi Youth League.

This short docu-drama explores the impact of football foundations in the sporting ecosystem in India. While exploring the themes of ambition, failure, the spirit of life, and love for 'the beautiful game' of football, the film is a celebration of hope, the display of true human spirit and grit that brings strangers together for a larger cause.

The children did not win the league but they won the hearts and minds of everyone with their playing style and passion for the beautiful game.

'Never Ask Why' is a maiden passion project from the start-up production house 'Eating Potatoes'. The film is directed by Saurabh Dubey, the Co-founder of Eating Potatoes, who is also an acclaimed musician, rapper and lyricist.

What Comes Next? What Comes Next?

What Comes Next?

What Comes Next? is a cinematic montage compiled entirely from amateur and low budget documentary footage shot in Wales during the post-war years leading up to and including the Festival of Britain celebrations in 1951.This theatre of the everyday touches on locations and lives that, though incidental in themselves, were symbolic of a broad sweep of change that ultimately transformed the face of Wales and ushered in a period of social reform, reconstruction and modernisation against a backdrop of economic austerity. Originally inspired by the montage documentaries of the 1920’s, the film seeks to present an insight into the challenges faced by Welsh working class communities that battled to build a better future while also reflecting on the legacy of Britian's colonial past that to this day continues to cast the deepest of shadows.

Ali and His Miracle Sheep Ali and His Miracle Sheep

Ali and His Miracle Sheep

Guided by his grandmother’s haunting Sumerian lament, 9-year-old mute Ali takes his sheep, Kirmeta, for sacrifice on a strenuous 400km journey across Iraq’s landscape, destroyed by years of war, to the shrine of an ancient saint. Along the journey Kirmeta becomes increasingly resistant and runs away to escape his bloody fate.

Ali eventually finds Kirmeta amongst carcasses of cars leftover from decades of violence and false promises of freedom. When Kirmeta collapses from exhaustion the pilgrims think he’s dead. But with the continuous prayers of grandmother back in the village, Kirmeta mysteriously recovers. Witnessing this the pilgrims declare him a MIRACLE SHEEP, a reputation that accompanies them on the rest of their journey. Can both boy and sheep survive the hardship and accept their fate?

A lyrical hybrid film whose symbolism exposes the suffering of a nation whose only hope left is a mute child and his “miraculous” sheep.

WINNER OF BEST FILM AWARD IN SHEFFIELD DOC FEST UK COMPETITION - The Sheffield Doc Fest jury wrote:

“The jury was bewitched and moved in equal measure by Maythem Ridha’s intensely cinematic and lyrical film, which has the quality of an intimate epic in spite of its short length. Strikingly confident in both its embrace of formal hybridity and tonal ambiguity, the film shifts delicately from moment to moment in a flow of imagery that is at once beautiful, absurd and utterly heartbreaking. Ali and His Miracle Sheep made us consider the very meaning of "British cinema", when the fates and lived realities of individual nations are so inextricably bound up with the actions of others.”
