The Cliff is a comedy-drama that satirizes stereotypes of the UK’s countries and uses allegory to explore the pressure of Brexit on its union. It follows an eclectic group of friends (one Scottish, one Welsh, one Northern Irish and two English) and their European friends as they navigate the twists and turns of their relationships. In this pilot episode, the group takes a vote that pushes them literally to the edge of a cliff.

THE CLIFF

The restrictive and predictable world of Regency England has become increasingly tiresome for one young heiress who yearns to meet more eligible and attractive suitors rather than ones at the balls and soirées nearby. When she hears there is an alternative, she has no hesitation in trying an unconventional dating service called Pandora’s Prospects. The promise of taking its clients from “portrait to proposal” sounds so exciting that she ignores the advice given by her judgmental friend. She instead hastily makes her choice from the curated selection of gentlemen matched to her requirements. Everything seems to be going well, until they meet.

Desires and Delusions

On the day of their wedding, Princess Hilderose follows her gallant fiancée Sir Maximilian to fulfill his one request before they get married: to slay a dragon to prove he's worthy of her love. But to her horror, the only thing that returns from the cave is his headless corpse, leading to the end of their fairy tale. However, as the credits roll, Princess Hilderose jumps in to stop it, determined to go back in time to the beginning of their story to save her love. She tries multiple times to save him, however her fiancée has more love than brains in his head, not heeding her warning and dying over and over again. Finally, angry and fed up, Princess Hilderose takes the sword for herself and kills the dragon with ease, dragging her fiancée into the church and finally getting her happily ever after.

The End

An ageing Detective and his younger Partner investigate an abandoned house with hidden and unusual consequences.

Floorboards

Slapstick comedy about an Eastern European girl arriving in the UK.

Text of the poem:

Legacy

Each summer, your mother’s hands
transformed heaped bowls of ripe fruit
into glistening fillings.
Her deft persuasion of dough into pastry
through the white silted air
Rhubarb, blueberry, peach, apple --
desserts for a year’s worth of holidays.

I tried to make pie
the way I tried to be a wife:
four pyrex pie plates, a battle
to bind flour, fat and water
into elusive tenderness.

You gave me a yearning
for homemade pie
that lingered longer than love,
then left with the pie plates

and what you learnt --
congee breakfasts,
the intricate textures of dim sum,
how to eat shark's fin
with a spoonful of vinegar,
never to forgo the good luck
of red bean soup, and always
to rest your chopsticks
parallel across the bowl
at a meal's end.

Sophie (Ambika Mod) has spent weeks planning a special day out for James’s (Conor Joseph) birthday. Something that will elevate their relationship with just the right amount of nostalgia, sentimentality and romance. But whilst searching for a lighter, to light a birthday candle, Sophie’s curiosity delivers an unexpected blow; a simple message in a card that reveals James’s unique pet name for her, “Goose”, may not be as original as she first thought.

Blindsided but not wanting to derail the day, Sophie presses ahead with a trip to the seaside town of Llandudno, North Wales. Set against the faded seafront with its neon-lit amusement arcades, Sophie begins to unravel as she views her relationship through a new lens, whilst James is forced to reckon with the relics of his past. Throughout the day they desperately search for something unique and special to define themselves, in a world that is exceptionally unoriginal.

The Pitch is a satirical short film that spoofs the advertising industry by imagining a potential collaboration between chicken nuggets and bluetooth speakers. Starring Lourdes Hernández, it follows a call between an agency creative and director trying to one up each other on the most important product of the year...vegan chicken nuggets. Ridiculous, absurd, yet only too real, The Pitch is a commentary on the agony of the creative process until it all becomes a mess.
